How It All Started

Every vehicle has a story — and few are as memorable the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray’s. While it eventually shaped the future of American automotive design, the Sting Ray almost never happened. The Automobile Manufacturer’s Association (AMA) banned sports car production in 1957, responding to illegal street racing’s increased popularity. But General Motors’ Director of Design, Bill Mitchell, continued developing a new Corvette in secret.

When the Corvette Sting Ray debuted in 1963, Jerry Logan was among its many satisfied customers. He even drove his Sting Ray across the country in 1964 when he moved to Portland, Oregon. In the early 2000s — years after he’d sold his original —Jerry purchased another ’63 Sting Ray, and had it restored beyond its original glory. This restomod approach brings the Sting Ray concept to full fruition, without the compromises required for mass production.

In “Split Window: Origins of the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray,” Jerry teams up with Peter Brock, the Sting Ray’s original designer, to tell the story of this influential vehicle’s creation, and its immeasurable impact on the automotive industry.
